Step Out from Behind the Desk into Growth and Visibility

September 15, 20253 min read

“If you’re an entrepreneur, stop hiding behind your desk. Push past your comfort zone. Go out and teach every corner of the world what you can about what you’ve built.”

Arlene Dickenson - Founder of District Ventures Capital and a Dragon for 15 seasons on Dragons’ Den

Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s an exhilarating, unpredictable journey filled with risk, resilience and relentless self-belief.

Amid the long hours, product iterations, and financial stress, it’s easy for even the most passionate entrepreneur to fall into the trap of staying behind the scenes by perfecting a website, tweaking the branding, or polishing presentation decks. These things matter, but not as much as getting out into the world and sharing your story, your product, your why.

Entrepreneurship begins with passion, an idea that burns in your head, a problem that needs solving, or a dream that demands to be chased. That passion is the fuel, but fuel alone doesn’t move the vehicle; action does.

The world won’t know what you've built unless you show it to them. That means pushing past your comfort zone because your story is bigger than your comfort zone. The difference between a “good” business and a great one often comes down to visibility and boldness. If you’ve created something that works, now is the time to step out and let more people see it, taste it, touch it, experience it.

Sharing Your Story

Start talking more publicly about what you've built. Share your journey with your community, your industry or networking groups far and wide. Get out from behind your desk and into the world at events, conferences, partnerships or social platforms.

Reaching the next level isn’t about hustling harder, it’s about leading more boldly. You don’t have to grow recklessly, but you do have to grow with intention.

Business owners may think they’re selling a product or service but really, aren’t they selling trust, expertise, and vision? Customers want to buy from people they believe in. Teams want to work for leaders with clarity and conviction. Partners want to invest in businesses that aren’t afraid to lead. That leadership begins with you showing up and stepping forward.

Thinking Bigger and Bolder

You’ve done the foundational work. You’ve shown that your idea works, that customers need you, and that your team can deliver. The next level won’t look like the first; it won’t be about doing more of the same. It’ll be about thinking bigger, telling your story louder, and trusting that your foundation is strong enough to grow on.

Playing it safe can make it look like you’re playing small. Go from building in silence to leading publicly with passion and confidence.

What's Next?

So, if you’re a business owner sitting at the edge of what’s next, stop hiding behind your desk. Entrepreneurship is not just about having a great idea, it’s about the willingness to chase it loudly, publicly and persistently. Push past your comfort zone. Go out and teach every corner of the world what you can about what you’ve built.

The world doesn’t need another silent genius. It needs bold leaders, passionate builders, and courageous storytellers. The only thing standing between where you are and where you could be is you. After all, isn’t your business your legacy, your passion and the reason you get up in the morning?
